How To Keep Your Curls Moisturised

Curls are amazing and versatile and if your not too careful… dry. Seeing as it is now summer it is more important than ever to keep your curls moisturised and it is easier than you think. Here are my top three tips for moisturising my curls.

    Hair Masks

Hair masks are a great way to keep your curls moisturised. At the moment my favourite hair mask is the Creme of Nature Pure Honey mask, it leaves my curls so soft and defined. In my personal experience, I find best results when I apply a hair mask bi-weekly and leave it on my hair for an hour or overnight before washing it out. When I apply a hair mask, I love to take the time to massage my scalp as well and I feel like it really helps the product soak in better. I hate getting my hair mask underneath my nails, especially if I've painted them because it makes my nail varnish chip off. Instead I prefer to use a scalp massage brush and of recent I have been using the O So Curly massage brush which has been good for moisturising my curls. Scalp massages stimulate blood flow to the scalp and give your hair more nutrients. If you haven't got yours as yet, I would highly recommend you do!

    Co-washing

If you don't do this already, now is a great time to start. Co-washing is when you wash your hair with a 'cleansing conditioner' and I learnt about it reading the Curly Girl: The Handbook, Lorraine Massey. It is a great method for people with curly or colour treated hair as it doesn't strip the hair of oils like regular shampoos. Many people swear by co-washing including myself. It has helped reduce my split ends and keeps my curls moisturised throughout the week. If your hair is dry, this will help to give it the added moisture it needs to stay healthy. When using a co-wash, you may find its doesn’t leave your scalp feeling as squeaky clean as you would like. To make sure I am really getting all the dirt and gunk out of my hair I also use my O So Curly scalp massage brush while washing to really help remove the dirt from my scalp.

    Satin pillows

This is a MUST, I swear by satin pillow cases and only use a cotton pillow case when I sleep at someone else's house. Some people prefer to wear a satin bonnet but this is a good way to make sure you don't get a mark on your forehead and if you find your bonnet slips off in the night. Satin pillowcases are amazing at keeping your hair healthy because they don’t suck out all of your hair's natural moisture. Cotton pillowcases can make your hair even drier especially after its had to deal with the cold outdoors and can make it brittle and dry and that’s something you don’t want. If you want to keep your moisture in your curls and not in your pillowcase, I would highly recommend using an O So Curly Pillowcase.
